LEADERSHIP FORUM
EABLF delegates challenge governments to action

Published: 15-OCT-04

Delegates at the Eskom African Business Forum

Delegates to the Eskom African Business Leaders Forum (EABLF) last night challenged African governments to embrace at a faster pace the changes the New Partnership for African Development (Nepad) envisages to help ensure Africa takes its rightful place on the international stage.

The EABLF is a meeting of top African leaders to discuss the role of leadership in Africa's prosperity. Last night saw eight panelists who had been speakers during the day face questions from the floor during a live television debate broadcast on SABC Africa. Delegates challenged African governments to move faster towards prosperity, saying that African entrepreneurs were able to embrace change at a much faster pace than governments.

They called on Nepad and the African Union to accelerate the pace of change. Panelists such as His Excellency Sir Ketumile Masire, former president of Botswana, cautioned that Nepad was still a young organisation which needed nurturing rather than harsh criticism to grow.

Other panelists inlcuded Dr Ynonne Muthien, group executive: corporate affairs at the MTN Group; Mr Lemmy Adebule, Regional general manager of Honeywell Process Solution Africa; Mr Chris Kirubi, Chairman of Haco Industries, Kenya; Ms Rose Umoren; President of Global Money Ltd Nigeria; Ms Mpho Latlape, Managing Director of Human Resources at Eskom Group Holdings Ltd; and Ms Nozipho Sithole, General Manager Ports and Corporate Affairs at the National Ports Authority of South Africa.
