LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA
Marula leads to a new clinic

Published: 24-JUN-05

The humble marula fruit has led to the building of a much-needed clinic in rural Limpopo.

Manufacturer Distell - the company that makes the Amarula cream liqueur - established the clinic in Limpopo's Edinburgh village as its latest investment in the region.

About 60 000 people are dependent on the income the harvesters make, when they gather the fruit during the six-week harvest from January to March. They then take it to Distell's processing plant.

Distell injects about R1,5 million a year into the local economy, according to a survey by the Institute of Natural Resources.

" The clinic should promote health awareness campaigns to ensure the local people are informed about all health related issues," says the Provincial Minister of Health and Social Development, Seaparo Sekoati - African Eye News Service
