LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA
Low-cost quality housing for 14 000

Published: 24-JUN-05

Limpopo has budgeted R 397.6 million to build about 14 000 low-cost quality houses this year.

" This is part of our housing plan and the Millennium development goals. But we ask councillors, communities and housing beneficiaries to help us fight against shoddy workmanship," said Maite Nkoana-Mashabane,the Provincial Minister of Government and Housing.

The housing plan aims to improve the standard of low-cost houses. The department was training 18 emerging contractors through the Sakhasonke development programme. Another 20 were being trained through the national Home Builders Registration Council.

From the R397,6 million budget allocation more than R127,7 million would be used to build 4 000 houses, in various informal settlements across the province. R212 million will be spent on 7 200 units in rural areas. R22,35 million on 700 units in urban areas and R 31,92 million on 1 000 units. 1,5% of the total housing allocation was set aside for emergency housing.

Sanitation systems in six old project linked housing programmes would be rehabilitated at a cost of R8 million.
