Mr. Jonathan Cook – Director: Executive Development , Gordon Institute of Business Science

Jonathan Cook holds the BA degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, BA (Honours) and MA (Counselling Psychology) cum laude from Unisa and MA from UCT.

He joined GIBS in 2004 as Director of Executive Development. He also teaches in the areas of Leadership, Organisational Behaviour, Group Performance and Interpersonal Skills. He is programme chair for Teaching the Practice of Management, a joint project of GIBS with the Lagos Business School and the IFC's Global Network of Business Schools, for developing teaching capacity among African business school faculty members. He is also responsible for Making Markets Work, a joint programme with the Harvard Business School.

Before joining GIBS he spent fifteen years on the academic staff of the Wits Business School. He founded the Management Development Unit in the WBS to provide skills development and customised leadership and management development programmes for organisations. He directed the MDU till 2001, when he was appointed Academic Director.

Before joining WBS, he was head of Assessment and Counselling at the National Institute for Personnel Research (NIPR). There he was involved, among other things, in the assessment of personnel for selection and career development, and in training intern psychologists.

He also owns Thornhill Associates (Pty) Ltd, which offers an online 360-degree questionnaire platform, through which he offers leadership feedback consulting.

His research interests include management and leadership development, assessment (particularly self-assessment), and the identification and development of potential.

He is a registered Counselling Psychologist and consults in the areas of leadership, assessment, career development, personnel selection, human resource development, mentorship and interpersonal effectiveness, individual and organisational learning, interpersonal skills, and team building.

His community involvement has included terms on the boards of the Indaleni Mission, Soweto Careers Centre, Witwatersrand branches of the Psychological Association and Institute for Counselling Psychology and other professional bodies.

He lives in Johannesburg, and is married with two sons.
